iLight Marina Bay 2014

My Reflections On iLight Marina Bay 2014

I like how artists (architects, sculptors, writers, musicians, poets, photographers, film makers) go beyond their brick and mortar approach to explore the use of urban space for public enjoyment. Better still when they collaborate and focus on a theme to rally the public for a worthy cause. Building a message of sustainability where Man and Nature can exist in harmony is always a laudable aim.

The curatorial team for i Light Marina Bay 2014 has succeeded to transform Marina Bay Singapore, well at least over the duration of the event from 7 to 30 March 2014, into a huge public art gallery. They did it by putting up a line-up of 28 light art installations, from both international and Singaporean artists. Bravo!

The festival’s theme of “Light + HeART” was introduced to help convey the message that “in the heart of the sustainability matters, is the matter of the heart”. It’s a rather tough choice to pick the top favourites. Here’s my favourites :

The Garden Angel – Echoes The Harmony of The Garden and Plants (Nature)

Another feature that I like in this festival is the clever use of the “Switch Off, Turn Up” campaign which runs in tandem. During the three weeks, stakeholders / property owners around the Marina Bay area collaborated by switching off non-essential lighting and turning up air conditioning temperatures during office hours. Since this year’s campaign will coincide with Earth Hour Singapore’s ‘light-off’ activities on 29 March, go and experience the feel good factor.

You still have 2 more days to enjoy the light festival and experience the other fun activities, including performances and outdoor dining, the latter being our Singaporean pastime. So, go and visit the festival on Saturday, 29 March between 8.30 – 9.30 pm, and you will be supporting Earth Day during its Earth Hour Singapore. Here’s some essential info for you :
