My 2013 Wimbledon Women’s Singles Comeback

My Wimbledon Comeback…

I made my comeback to this year's 2013 Wimbledon Championships Women's Singles. No, I did not have to compete through the qualifying and elimination rounds for I went straight into the last four in the semi-finals. My comeback to the game was just as a spectator of course. Whilst I have full respect for the drive and motivation that propel, both the men and women tennis athletes to display their skills and stardom, I cannot understand the apparent lack of rules to rein in the increasingly fashionable behaviour of giving out the unearthly shriekings and gruntings. Certain players are in the habit of shrieking and grunting for every shot that they make.

No Shriekings, No Gruntings…

I have enjoyed the women's semi-finals this year for the simple reason that there was peace and quiet. What a pleasure to rediscover the joy of watching tennis being played in the world's most famous tennis championship played on grass at the annual Wimbledon Championships. Stars such as Chris Evert, Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf and many others did not have to vent out the rather unlady-like shriekings and gruntings.

2013 Women's Final…

The 2013 women's final was not the finest display because the ever-smiling and crowd sweetheart Sabine Lisicki suffered stage fright and was not playing at the same level when she ousted the first seed Serena Williams during their quarter-final. Marion Bartoli, also playing her first grand slam, was crowned the champion. It was still enjoyable to watch the game, without the shriekings and gruntings. The Huffington post summed it best, describing it thus : "One of the strangest Wimbledons produced one of its quirkiest champions in Marion Bartoli, the winner of a final that had the overwhelmed runner-up in near tears during the match."
