Now in Clarke Quay, there’s VLV Singapore, an all-in-one ultimate lifestyle destination. It promises to be the go-to crown jewel at the heart of the entertainment riverfront. In the tourism front, Singapore in general and the Singapore Riverfront, in particular, need new attractions and venues which can offer an experience on par with the world’s best.
It is a recondite fact that the owners did not bat an eye when they set aside a S$8M budget to establish VLV as a lifestyle destination of choice for the stylish and the well-heeled. If their business philosophy embodies “thinking big and going far” I can resonate with it.
VLV Singapore’s Heritage Venue
Housed in a heritage building built in the 1880s, VLV combines a modern and posh Chinese restaurant, a glamourous club lounge, an al fresco courtyard bar with live music and a riverfront dining.
All these are set in 20,000 square feet (1858 sqm) and fronting the Singapore River in the Clarke Quay entertainment area. This is the place where it was once occupied by Indochine’s Forbidden City.
The Courtyard Bar
Gone are the huge terracotta warriors that used to line Indochine’s Forbidden City in the courtyard. Now it has been transformed into The Courtyard Bar and is a more open space with lush tropical plants, much like the rest of Singapore’s garden city.
Enjoy a pre-dinner drink or two in this great spot before heading to the restaurant inside the heritage building. Or lounge and watch the world go by along the bustling riverfront in the evening. For although it opens at noon till 3 am, the Courtyard is just too hot to be having drinks al fresco until the evening. The place is then bathed with the changing multi-coloured LED and transforms into a cool alfresco bar with live music.
The Club Lounge
As you enter into the heritage building (there is another entry from the River Valley Road side), you will appreciate the luxurious and contemporary interiors of The Club Lounge. It opens from 6 pm till 3 am.
For those of you who enjoy clubbing, a stellar clubbing experience awaits. Party the night away in its intimate dance floor, enjoy premier table service and world-class entertainment right by the riverfront. And if you want to see and be seen, this place is yours whilst you sip a vintage champagne or a 25-year old whisky.
The Posh Modern Chinese Restaurant
Helmed by Singapore’s very own, Chef Martin Foo curates a menu of Cantonese flavours and seafood variations for modern day fine dining. He has honed his culinary skills with over 25 years with the Lei Garden and Tung Lok groups, the latter at Tong Le Private Dining where he started and popularised individually-plated set tasting menus for Chinese fine dining. For the few times at Tong Le Private Dining, I have always enjoyed their food pairings, rotating dining space and quality service.
The restaurant is located on the second floor is open daily for lunch (served from 12 noon to 3 pm) and dinner (served from 6 pm to 11 pm).
My first visit in October last year to VLV was driven partly by its Chinese restaurant (plus its master chef of course) and partly by what a hefty renovations budget can achieve in setting the interior’s ambience and mood of the historic building. I was impressed on both counts. In fact, I was inspired enough to quote from Huxley, my favourite English philosopher, writer and novelist:
Beauty Is Worse Than Wine,
It Intoxicates Both
The Holder And The Beholder.
The Riverside Dining
This is a perfect dining option if you are in the mood for an informal dining in an al fresco setting. Enjoying a hearty meal of live seafood outdoors in old Singapore was a happy memory. Now at the Riverside, you can enjoy a variety of live seafood along with your choice of specially curated wine and spirits while soaking in the sights and sounds of a river steeped in history.
